How To Do A Green Tea Rinse For Natural Hair

Green tea! We all love it. It’s rich, tasty, and a little birdie says it improves body metabolism and helps burn off extra weight. But what if you could use it in a different way? One that doesn’t involve drinking? Well, that’s where a green tea rinse for natural hair comes in. Green tea is packed full of so many useful vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are extremely beneficial to your hair.

So, what does green tea do to your hair?

Green tea contains vitamins B2, C, and folic acid (B12). In addition, it contains essential amino acids, catechins which aid hair regrowth, and even antioxidants. The antioxidants in green tea help to detoxify your hair shaft by removing toxins we pick up from everyday use of chemicals and from the environmental pollution. The caffeine in green tea also helps to energize and stimulate the hair follicles, thus preventing hair fall. A green tea rinse for natural hair is basically a rich cocktail of vitamins and minerals that keeps your hair healthy.

Is green tea good for natural hair?

A green tea rinse leaves your hair feeling softer and more malleable (obedient if you will) than before. It contains no harmful constituents (except of course you have allergies :|), prevents shedding (check out shedding or breakage?), and it helps to fight dandruff by nourishing your scalp (check out simple, natural ways to combat dandruff). On the whole, it’s a great way to keep your hair healthy.

Does green tea regrow/grow hair?

Let’s take a deeper look at the components of green tea, shall we? Vitamin B2 is responsible for activating vitamins B6 and niacin, and all three vitamins are crucial to hair growth. While catechins actually slow down hormones that cause hair loss. Catechins also promote hair growth by stimulating hair follicles. So in general, a green tea rinse is something you should try if you suffer from hair loss.

How to do a green tea rinse for natural hair


  • Brew 2 bags of green tea (must be the type with caffeine) in 400ml of boiling water.  
  • Allow the tea to cool down till it is lukewarm (Optional: add a teaspoon of honey)


For easy application, pour the green tea into a spray bottle and spritz all over your hair (roots, ends, and all). Cover with a plastic cap and let sit for a minimum of 30mins before rinsing the tea out with cool water.

NB: This should be done after washing or co-washing your hair. Drinking green tea is good for your hair too.
